Some years back in New York City a man worked for the investment division of Lehman Brothers. He participated in the public rollout of Google and in the defense of the entertainment company Six Flags. He worked through more than $8 Billion dollars worth of deals and got to ‘lift the hood’ on a lot of businesses, seeing how they run and how their cultures were built.
One day, this man received a call from his uncle who was running a small emergency room physicians group in Southern California. After helping clear some difficult hurdles for the older man, the uncle asked the talent financial whiz to come on full-time. The young man agreed, moving out from New York to Los Angeles.
For the next 10 years he developed and executed on his planning and new company infrastructure. The small ER physician group soon became a leading provider services organization leader in the Southwest U.S. – seeing over 1 million visits per year. Things were going well and were going to get even better.
In 2008 he was introduced to, and eventually helped take public a company called the Language Access Network (LAN). Among other things, LAN provided what was back then, TV video interpretation services for patients. He attacked a common unhelped problem, namely doctors unable to properly communicate and gain health and family history for 1 in 5 patients. Specifically, twenty-percent who were either non-english speaking patients or those with significant hearing loss.
The data and encounter results were clear and common. A significant communication gap existed and was unsolved for. This led to heavier practice of defensive medicine, overutilization of test ordering, higher medical harm rate, poorer outcomes, and lower patient satisfaction scores. It was here that James ‘Jamey’ Edwards decided to grow a national organization that could bring humanity back into healthcare, by helping both doctors and patients.
Cloudbreak Health began in 2015, a culmination of a company with two separate disciplines. A digital services and secure broadband technology helping care providers to speedily connect, transit and secure sensitive patient data and communiations, and the language interpretation services to support culture and patients whose communications became major health limtations.
